Major General John Gibbon, born in Pennsylvania, with his family, spent his youth in Charlotte, NC. He was appointed to West Point and remain in the service of the Union through out his career
1st Sgt. Daniel Webster Burke, presented the Medal of Honor, for his action during the Battle of Shepherdstown in Virginia on 20 September 1862. Retired in 1899 as a Brigadier General.
